My XJS Story

My XJS Story goes something like this: It’s 1994, i’m 28 years old and I’ve just paid £7500 for my first XJS. A beautiful gold XJS coupe registration E323YJO. It comes with a full service history and has covered just 75k from new and it’s in gorgeous condition. The excitement I feel upgrading from a Ford Sierra to a proper car is immense.

I’d always loved the XJS, the way the car looked, the way the smoke would emit from the twin exhausts on a misty autumn morning. The way they seemed to just waft along, I really though I’d arrived…

However, 3 short years later I’m at a BMW dealership in The Midlands picking up a 5 series BMW, because as much as i’d loved my old XJS I felt I’d done the Jag thing. I wanted something a bit more uber cool for me and my young family…

My first Jaguar XJS
Jaguar XJS BRG Manual

A decade went by and i’d not seriously considered another Jaguar. To be honest I was happy with the German stuff, but then in about 2005 I found a 1992 British Racing Green 4.0Ltr Manual which ticked the boxes for me. It was stored in a friends lockup and he only wanted a £1000 for it. It was a little tatty and had done 146K, but it was a lovely driver, I cleaned it up, did a bit of cosmetic bodywork and serviced it and used it for fun. It never let me down or needed anything other than routine maintenance…

At this point in my life I decided to start buying and selling classic cars. I didn’t intend to specialise in a particular model or marque, but as time went by, my enthusiasm for the XJS returned. I started buying them more regularly. It didn’t take long before I became very knowledgeable about their strengths and weaknesses. As well as recognising the good from the bad and I decided that XJS’s were the cars for me…

Today, I find it very easy to assess these cars, it’s almost like a sixth sense. I appreciate that XJS’s are actually very strong cars and that with regular servicing they are reliable and a pleasure to own and drive… These days I am also much more appreciative of the respect a classic car deserves. So now show my classic cars a bit more respect than I used to… Although thrashing a manual XJS through the gears is still a very enjoyable experience that instantly transports me back to my younger days…
